X-ray imaging, the most utilized diagnostic procedure at Royal University Hospital, is about to become better, faster and safer thanks to BHP’s $1 million donation.
BHP’s donation will replace outdated computers and lengthier cassette-based processes used at the hospital for almost 20 years with the newest digital technology and equipment for RUH’s two busiest X-ray suites.
“BHP is honoured to help bring new state-of-the-art X-ray technology to RUH to support advanced care and ultimately save lives in our province,” says Karina Gistelinck, BHP’s Asset President Potash.
X-rays are often the initial diagnostic resource requested by medical teams to help them assess, guide treatment and monitor progress for a range of illnesses and injuries ranging from various trauma, orthopedic and cancer surgeries.
RUH’s general X-ray department sees 68,000 patients a year and performs approximately 81,000 exams in its three X-ray rooms, two of which are being upgraded through the support of BHP.
The new X-ray technology and equipment, to be operational by the end of the year, will produce higher-quality images while using a reduced dose of radiation, making the environment safer for both patients and medical teams. Better image quality leads to more accurate diagnosis, resulting in more timely and effective treatment.
RUH Foundation is extremely fortunate to have a community partner like BHP. In recognition of BHP’s generosity, RUH’s X-ray imaging area has been named the “BHP Medical Imaging Centre.”
