For Bob Steane, former Senior Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of Cameco, philanthropy wasn’t only about a financial donation to improve our community, it was a passion he embraced with hands-on enthusiasm.
Whether making a lead donation for the newest generation of interventional imaging at Royal University Hospital, volunteering at the Lighthouse, serving breakfast at the Friendship Inn with his partner Kathy Berg and family, or serving on the Board of Directors of the Royal University Hospital Foundation—Bob’s legacy of compassion and philanthropy has improved lives and communities in Saskatchewan and across the country.
Bob’s generous support of RUH Foundation will continue long after his sudden passing on July 30, 2019. On December 3 of that year, Giving Tuesday, it was announced that Bob had left RUH Foundation, Saskatoon Community Foundation and St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation with the largest philanthropic estate gift in each parties history. In excess of $4 million from this generous estate gift has helped to purchase the newest generation of CT imaging equipment at RUH; and has and will continue to fund fellowship training grants; advanced technology and equipment for trauma care; Community Mental Health Endowment grants; and psychiatric research.
Bob was a philanthropist who truly loved humanity, believed in people and cared greatly. His wish through his legacy gift was to encourage others to give of their time, make charitable donations and include RUH Foundation in their Will or estate plans. He is greatly missed.
