Neurosurgical Robotic System

There are more than 10,000 people living with epilepsy and seizures in Saskatchewan. They can develop challenging mental health conditions, suffer at work and in their social lives, be hospitalized, and even die as a result of their seizures.

Many are able to manage their seizures with medication. Unfortunately, approximately one in six will only see improvement by having surgery. The current waiting list continues to grow each year.

You can help transform seizure care in our province by supporting Royal University Hospital (RUH) Foundation’s fundraising campaign to bring a neurosurgical robot and deep brain imaging guidance technology to RUH. Your generosity will have an enduring impact, offering hope for patients with drug-resistant seizures and their families.

Seizures come from a small part of the brain and their specific location is unique in every patient. Mapping and placement of tiny electrodes in the brain are fundamental in determining what part of the brain is triggering a seizure.

The traditional method to inserting electrodes can be invasive and take many hours. A neurosurgical robot procedure is minimally invasive and takes only one to two hours. This leading-edge technology also produces smaller incisions, is much more precise, minimizes damage to surrounding healthy tissue, reduces post-operative pain, and leads to faster recovery time.

The information gathered from this innovative technology will provide medical teams with the most sophisticated information available in determining the most appropriate course of treatment. If the specific part of the brain causing the seizure can be removed, disconnected or stimulated, surgery can be an option for the patient.

Your support for a neurosurgical robot for our hospital will enable our medical teams to provide world-class seizure care right here in Saskatchewan. Your generosity will offer patients a chance at a better quality of life free from the debilitating effects of seizures and the limitations of medication for years to come.

“A neurosurgical robot is a leap forward for seizure surgery in Saskatchewan. With this, we will be able to investigate and treat even the most complex cases, to achieve seizure freedom for our patients.”
