A Legacy Gift for Mental Health: “Just Because We Care”

Elmer and Anne Guenther have always lived lives full of hard work, gratitude, and giving. For over 50 years, they worked side by side on their farm, planting seeds not only in the soil but also in their community. Their dedication to their family, to their work, and to helping others is always at the heart of everything they do.

Anne taught for 30 years, spending countless hours in the classroom and in the larger school community. She has always been a strong role model for their children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends. Since retiring, Anne hasn’t slowed down. She continues to find new ways to give back including volunteering to teach English to newcomers. Anne believes in the power of knowledge and kindness.

Elmer, ever the farmer, devoted his life tending to crops—a dependable man with a heart as big as the prairie fields he worked. Six years ago, he faced a health crisis that brought him to the hospital. It was a humbling experience that left him deeply grateful for the care he received and for the continued
health of his family.

“We’ve been fortunate,” Anne says. “Our kids are healthy, our grandchildren are healthy, and Elmer and I are healthy. We know not everyone is as fortunate. So, this is just our way of giving back.”

When it came time to decide where to direct their charitable gift, the choice was clear. Mental health has always been a cause close to their hearts. The Guenthers understand how life can change in an instant and believe strongly in the importance of supporting mental health services for those navigating difficult times.

They chose to name Royal University Hospital Foundation as the beneficiary of their Registered Income Fund (RIF)—a simple decision that carried powerful meaning. Their legacy will be one of care, compassion, and community.

“We do it just because we care,” Anne adds.

For Elmer and Anne, this legacy gift isn’t about the money—it’s about creating a legacy of care, kindness, and support for those who need it. They have been blessed with good health and a supportive family, and they want to share those blessings with people in need. Their family fully support this decision, knowing it reflects the values their parents have always lived by.

To those who might be considering naming RUH Foundation as a beneficiary of their own RIF, Anne and Elmer offer this encouragement: “It’s so important to give if you can.”

While the tax benefits made the choice even more straightforward, for the Guenthers, the heart of the matter was always the same— helping those who need it most.

Their gift, given with humility and warmth, will touch lives for years to come. It stands as a beacon of hope for patients in need and a lasting reminder of Elmer and Anne’s enduring compassion.

No matter the size, every gift has the power to make a difference. Contributions like Elmer and Anne’s help ensure that patients receive the care they need, that families feel supported, and that care teams can do their best work. Together, we are building a healthier future for our community—just because we care.
