Construction begins at Royal University Hospital (RUH) this week on a major project to upgrade and expand the adult Intensive Care Unit. When complete, RUH will be home to Saskatchewan’s largest and most advanced ICU.

The two-year, multi-million-dollar project will grow the ICU from 19 to 26 single-patient rooms and modernize the existing space. Construction will move forward in two phases, with Phase 1 beginning in the former Neonatal Intensive Care Unit space. ICU patients will be relocated to another vacant unit within RUH for the duration of construction, allowing the existing 19 beds to remain fully operational throughout.

RUH Foundation CEO Jennifer Molloy joined Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill, Saskatchewan Health Authority CEO Andrew Will and Dr. Mark Fenton, Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Integrated Saskatoon Health to mark the announcement.

“Our donors understand that RUH’s Intensive Care Unit is where families from across Saskatchewan turn during the most critical moments. We are grateful to be a partner in creating a space that matches the extraordinary skills of our medical teams. When you need complex care, you are in the right place at RUH,” said Jennifer Molloy, CEO, RUH Foundation.

A shared mission across Saskatchewan

RUH is the epicentre for Saskatchewan’s medical care and the province’s largest teaching hospital. Patients from every corner of the province come through its doors for the most complex care. The ICU expansion is a direct investment in that role.

The project is supported by a $17 million capital investment from the Government of Saskatchewan, in partnership with the Saskatchewan Health Authority. A $3-million investment by RUH Foundation donors will help move the project from plan to reality.

“Expanding ICU capacity at Royal University Hospital means more access to support critically ill and surgical patients in Saskatoon and surrounding areas,” said Saskatchewan Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill.

“By modernizing the existing ICU and adding seven new beds, we are better equipped to respond to the most complex and urgent patient needs, while supporting and enhancing the high-quality care delivered by critical care teams,” said Saskatchewan Health Authority CEO Andrew Will.

What this means for Saskatchewan

Expanded ICU capacity at RUH means more room for the most critical care in the province. It means faster access for patients from rural and underserved communities. It means continued investment in the technology, infrastructure and teams that reduce the need for out-of-province care.

This is health care moving forward in Saskatchewan, made possible through the partnership of the Government of Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Health Authority and the generosity of donors across the province.
