2023 Women Leading Philanthropy Grant Recipient

Congratulations to Royal University Hospital Foundation’s 2023 Women Leading Philanthropy (WLP) $100,000 Grant Recipient, Dr. Mita Manna!

On Monday, September 25, 2023, WLP donors gathered at TCU Place for an extraordinary evening aimed at creating meaningful change and advancements in health care by supporting leading-edge women’s initiatives at Royal University Hospital.

Earlier this year, applications for the WLP grant were accepted from female clinicians and researchers at Royal University Hospital.

The applications were evaluated by a peer review committee, consisting of representatives from the medical profession, RUH Foundation volunteer Board, WLP Steering Committee and business leaders.

The rigorous process resulted in these three short-listed projects being brought forward for consideration by WLP donors at the annual voting meeting on the 25th:

  • Dr. Alexandra Carter and her project: Empowering Women and Young Adults with Epilepsy by Fostering a Culture of Holistic Wellness;
  • Dr. Rabia Shahid and her project: Empowering breast cancer patients with diabetes by understanding their needs and creating a pathway that improves their care, treatment experience and diabetes management during cancer treatment; and
  • Dr. Mita Manna and her project: Mainstream Genetic Testing: A Pilot Program in Saskatchewan

Thank you to all three of these brilliant women for presenting their innovative ideas and compelling reasons to support their transformational projects.

Congratulations to Dr. Manna for being selected by WLP donors for the 2023 WLP $100,000 grant that will support her work to transform health care for women and their families in Saskatchewan by allowing cancer clinicians to order hereditary cancer genetic testing without prior consultation with genetic counselors. Timely genetic information has the potential to improve cancer care and reduce cancer-related deaths.

We are excited to invest in Dr. Manna’s project and look forward to seeing the positive change that will come thanks to her commitment and hard work.

Since 2018, $700,000 has been raised and invested to advance women’s leadership and health care through donor support of RUH Foundation’s WLP program.
