Virtual visitation at Royal University Hospital possible thanks to partnership

Saskatoon’s Royal University Hospital’s (RUH’s) medical social workers support patients every day and see how family and friends play an important role in their recovery. That’s why RUH’s social workers are grateful to have received 20 tablets for patient use. The gift is the result of a partnership between Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA), Royal University Hospital Foundation and Huawei Canada. Huawei Canada is one of dozens of companies, foundations and individuals who’ve made similar contributions to help virtually connect patients with families and friends during the pandemic.

“Huawei Canada understands the importance of keeping patients and their families connected to one another, especially at a time when contact is limited due to COVID-19,” said Christopher Stoicheff, director of Public Affairs and Communications for Huawei Canada.

“We sincerely hope that the Huawei MediaPad tablets will help patients stay connected to their loved ones as they receive care. We want to thank Royal University Hospital Foundation and the health care professionals at RUH for their outstanding commitment to the people of Saskatchewan.”

The Huawei tablets are already helping patients make vital connections. A grandmother was able to both celebrate her grandson’s life and grieve his passing by virtually attending his funeral, which was livestreamed. Another woman who is undergoing cancer treatments was able to video chat with her husband of 50 years. Seeing his and some of her other family members faces and hearing their voices helped ease her fears and alleviate her loneliness.

These connections keep patients fighting and healing so they can return home to those they love.

“Patient care and attention is the first priority at RUH and as we are all trying to navigate the new normal we are so thankful for partners such as Huawei Canada for their generous donation. This gift will offer patients and their families a sense of connection, support and love during an already stressful time,” said RUH Foundation, CEO Arla Gustafson.

“We know staying connected to family is an important part of the recovery process and we are grateful to Huawei and Royal University Hospital Foundation for ensuring our patients can spend time with their families virtually,” said SHA CEO Scott Livingstone.
